Miriam Shigoley

Personal Experience

M

iriam Shigoley joined KENWEB in 2018 after completing her BSc in Applied Aquatic Science at Egerton University. She began her career with hands-on roles in an aquaculture farm and later through mentorship at KENWEB. She contributed to ichthyological collections and wetland research initiatives at the National Museums of Kenya. Her experience at NMK sparked her interest in research and led to a scholarship to pursue an MSc in Biodiversity Conservation and Management at Mohammed V University in Morocco.

She is currently a joint PhD student at Hasselt and Liège University in Belgium. Her research explores how knowledge on fish parasites can support aquaculture. Focusing on Nile tilapia in the Upper Tana River region, Kenya, she combines parasite diversity and pathology data with insights from aquaculture stakeholders.

Miriam’s long-term goal is to bridge science and practice by informing fisheries policy and empowering local stakeholders with knowledge on fish, human and ecosystem health.
